Phil Laak, a self-dubbed “Semi-Professional” poker player, quickly stood out as a character with his antics and signature attire. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1972, Laak has been a sports bet broker, a market speculator and a Real Estate investor: in other words, no stranger to gambling.
Laak started playing poker in 1999, entering eight tournaments between then and 2003. Eight is not a high number for a pro poker player, but considering three years in a row he was in the main event on the World Poker Tour, Laak is determined to be a force in the game; he won the World Poker Tour invitational in 2004
Wearing a hooded sweatshirt, hood up and pulled close, and sunglass while at the table has earned Laak the moniker “The Unabomber.” His unusual nickname and high-energy antics have made him a stand-out character regardless of how he plays. Fan sites seem to be sharply divided on the topic of his behavior, either stating he is greatly entertaining or greatly obnoxious.
Laak believes in the ability to mentally connect with other players around the table, following esoteric theory, and believes his mental preparation and ability gives him an edge.
Laak’s personality, uniqueness and game play all resulted in him being named host of E! Hollywood Hold’em, a show that takes the camera into celebrity homes to watch the stars play poker.
A resident of Los Angeles, California, Laak holds a degree in mechanical engineering. The poker and television personality also has a connection to the movies, as he has been seen mentoring Jennifer Tilly, movie star and poker champion in her own right.
