Phil Ivey: "My Wife Helps Me Out With Everything I Can't Do, Which Is Everything"

Phil Ivey is less than 30 years old. That is almost nothing for a poker player. But he is considered to be one of the best players in the world. They say he will certainly win the WSOP in a couple of years.

Phil already has a decade of professional poker experience. He started playing poker at age 16 and at 17 he began sneaking into casinos. He had a fake ID, which he was using for about 4 years. The name in the ID was Jerome Graham. "When I turned 21, I walked into the Tropicana and found the shift manager," recalls Phil. "I said, "Hey, my name's Phil." She said, "What?" I said, "My name's Phil. I'm sorry." She told me it was OK."   Phil won his first World Series of Poker title at age 23. Two years later he set a record by winning 3 tournament bracelets in 2002.   However, he believes there are plenty of things he has to learn to become a really proficient player. Maybe that is Phil's main winning secret: he is constantly working to make his game better. "Hey, It's Phil Ivey!"  Phil plays poker on a regular basis and lives in Las Vegas with his wife Luciaetta. "She helps me out with everything I can't do, which is everything," says Ivey. "I can't do anything because I'm playing poker all the time. She takes care of me, and is definitely a help when I lose. Without Luciaetta, I wouldn't be nearly this successful."   Phil tries to keep fit and he believes it is very useful for a professional poker player. "I have played some crazy sessions, like 50 hours straight. That's why I have to stay in shape," he admits.   Phil does not want to take the role of a celebrity. He's just a poker player, he thinks. "There are times when I go places and hear, "Hey, it's Phil Ivey!" when I'm walking by. I never expected anything like that."
