Whether she is known as Mary Jones or Mary Jones Meyer, she is now known as a poker champion. Mary Jones was the winner of the 37th annual World Series of Poker Ladies Event, an event that many had pegged for Jennifer Tilly, the defending champion. Jones was rendered speechless for a moment or two right after it was clear that she was the newest champion of the Ladies Event. Grabbed up by her ecstatic husband, Jones was heard to say that this was the second happiest moment of her life.
The final table was filled with nine women who ranged from 24 years old to 50 years old, but the day was destined to belong to Jones. Hailing from Henderson, Nevada, Jones managed to take the table captainship away from Chicago artist Shawnee Barton, who had been in command of the table for most of the day. Over $260,000 plus the coveted gold World Series of Poker bracelet certainly made a more satisfying win than car washes and chore exemptions, the normal kinds of prizes that Jones played for. While luck certainly played a role in her victory, considering that she spiked an ace on the river to win the final hand when she was all in, there's no lack of skill involved in anyone reaching the final table in any event. Mary Jones is the new Ladies champion of the World Series of Poker for the next year because of luck and skill both.
