Miami John Cernuto: 'One Of The Best Tournament Stud Players In The World'

The pressure at an average gaming table in any casino can make a good poker player sweat. The type of pressure inherent to high stakes poker, with the world watching on ESPN, is enough to send most players to a place with soft walls and men in white coats who start most conversations with the words "Tell me about your mother". To Miami John Cernuto though, pressure has been a way of life.

Before assaulting the world of professional poker, Miami John was an air traffic controller at Miami Dade International Airport. When managing the flight patterns of dozens of airplanes, bowing to pressure or losing concentration for a moment can result in catastrophic loss of life. It was in this unlikely place where John learned to master high pressure situations, a skill that would eventually frustrate Omaha HiLo players across the country.

When President Ronald Reagan fired the striking air traffic controllers in 1981, Miami John decided to take the opportunity to turn his longtime hobby, poker, into his profession. After some hard years in the beginning, John's skill and grace under pressure began to manifest itself in the form of wins. Most of those victories came in his preferred game of Omaha HiLo. In fact, since the day he went pro, Miami John has more first place finishes in this event then any other player in history.

Far from being a one trick pony, Cernuto is a proven commodity in other games as well. Of his three World Series of Poker Championship bracelets, only one is in Omaha HiLo. He took the Seven Card Stud Eight-or-Better championship in 1996. A year later he took the coveted bracelet in No Limit Holdem. It wasn't until 2002 that he finally took a WSOP championship in his signature game.

A lot can be said of Miami John Cernuto. People can talk about his skill, his money totals, his patience and a score of other traits that make him one of the world's best. Perhaps what is most telling about this player though, is that he is a man that no other competitor wants to see sit down at their table.
