This person is the kind of buddy you want in college. No more passing the hat to drum up funds for a good party - this guy has got the cash. Isaac Haxton is a Boston native who now calls Syracuse home. He began playing poker at home games during his high school years. At the age of 21, he's earned nearly $1.3 million playing poker.
Known by friends as the Lizard King, Haxton is hardly the poster child for a poor college student. His playing style is described as calm and very mature for someone his age. As a freshman at Brown University he played poker at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino outside of Syracuse during his winter break and earned $1,500. He later deposited the money into an online poker account and kept his poker skills fresh playing 20 hours each week and winning a few thousand dollars. He spent his summers away from college playing online poker full-time from home.
His parents were not sure what to make of his supposed online winnings. Online poker was uncharted territory to them. Once Haxton showed his parents the first check for his winnings - they warmed up to the idea. He earned $40,000 playing online poker during one summer followed by $100,000 the next.
Aside from college studies, Haxton has invested considerable effort studying the sport, confessing that he has read nearly thirty books to fine-tune his poker skills. The reading has paid off.
Haxton won $861,789 in the Bahamas at the Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure at the Atlantis Resort and Casino in early January 2007. The Travel Channel was there to film the face-off that drew 937 players as part of the series sponsored by the World Poker Tour. The fact that a make-up call was on the filming agenda left Haxton a little uneasy - but he kept the composure he's known for and went on to win second place.
