His first major win dates back to 1989. In 1992 he won the WSOP golden bracelet for the first place in Pot Limit Omaha event and… quit gambling for eleven years. What was he doing? He just enjoyed quite like at his cattle farm in Alabama. But he became bored and now he is back again.
“Alabama Cowboy” Hoyt Corkins was born and grew in rural Alabama. After classes he played poker with his father who was his first coach. It was a very useful experience. He successfully uses a lot of techniques, which he has learnt from his father, even nowadays. Due to his image Hoyt has received a nickname ‘Alabama Cowboy.’ But after he won the golden WSOP bracelet Phil Hellmuth called him ‘Mr. All-In.’ Corkins played very aggressively and that was the best characteristic for him. After that event his new nickname became even more popular than his older one. However after that tournament he quit gambling for more than a decade. He Is Back In 2003 Corkins returned to the tournament circle. He started with winning a humble sum of $575 for the 13th position in Omaha Hi-Lo. But three months after he won more than $1 million at World Poker Finals, one of the various WPT events. Even the fact that he was sick with the flu didn’t affect his play. Though his health was weak, his playing style remained aggressive. A Gambler Or A Farmer? Hoyt Corkins has two residences: one in Las Vegas (he participates in major tournaments while living there) and the other in Alabama (he has 60 heads of cattle there). He is a real cowboy who can’t live without his ranch for a long time. That’s why he participates only in big tournaments, the rest of the time being busy with taking care of his ranch.
