Harry Demetriou

Harry Demetriou is the kind of guy who takes playing poker very seriously. Demetriou’s proven formula for success has worked in a variety of enterprises, including clinical science, sports betting, the stock market, and, of course, poker. What’s his secret? Well it’s really not much of a secret at all. Demetriou attributes his success to good ole’ fashioned hard work, dedication, and an intense preparation and focus that he likens to “training for the Olympics.”

For instance, he reads numerous books on the subject of playing poker so that he can maximize his playing strategy. He also talks poker shop with his contemporaries so he can both gain and share strategies, insights, and general poker know-how. To prepare himself for the long-distance run of major tournaments that can sometimes last eight hours, he practices staying up long hours playing poker. He also works out to build his strength and gave up some bad habits (a poor diet, drinking and smoking) to improve his stamina.  It is this hard lined mentality that has led to Demetriou winning third place in the 2002 World Series of Poker Limit Hold ‘em event and third place in the 2003 Crown Australasian Poker Championships. In addition, Demetriou gained some recognition in the 2005 WSOP when he placed second in the $2,500 Short-Handed No Limit Hold ‘em event and sixth in the $2,000 No Limit Hold ‘em event.  Despite his success, Demetriou has only been playing poker for a few years. He believes that it is his dedication and discipline to the game that has enabled him to win so many tournaments in such a short period of time. Demetriou’s attitude about playing the game is so professional that he sometimes loses his patience with those who use antics or brash behavior as ploys for their poker games. He believes such moves are amateurish and are used to cover up a lack of talent.  Demetriou, who is from merry ole London, believes that with discipline, perseverance, and dedication, he will be able to win a gold bracelet at the WSOP.Related Articles:WSOP 2004: A Little Humility, Please
