Gavin Griffin was born on August 28, 1981 in Darien, Illinois. Although he is frequently up against some formidable opponents at least twice his age, Griffin is quickly racking up experience and earning prestigious poker titles. To date he has earned an impressive $2,950,081 playing poker and is among the youngest ever to earn a WSOP bracelet.
While a lot of poker media outlets have yet to focus on this rising star, what is known about him is that he started on his way to poker success in a rather humble way. Griffin was just a freshman at Texas Christian University when he played his first game of poker in the company of his buddies at a simple home game. Since that very low-key beginning, Griffin has become one of the many young self-taught poker gurus that seem to be emerging onto the poker scene. Taking advantage of the many poker forums available online and poker improvement books - Griffin started learning how to play to win. He supplemented his growing knowledge by taking a job as a dealer at an Arlington, Texas private poker room. Outside of work he remained loyal to his pursuit of poker knowledge and experience by participating in regular small stakes games. During his fourth year of college he made the decision to pursue poker as a professional. The decision quickly proved to be a wise one - likely buffering any dismay his family may have felt when he decided to quit college to play poker. In 2004, during his first WSOP appearance, Griffin made an impressive entrance - winning the $3,000 buy in pot limit event. More recently he snagged another huge win at the European Poker Tour Grand Final Championship. This win marked the EPT's greatest prize pool ever and Griffin walked away with a cool $2.4 million.
