David Chiu

David Chiu

Though he may not be the most well-known poker player on TV these days, David Chiu has garnered a reputation as an aggressive, tough to beat competitor. Chiu, who was originally born in China, has spent most of his life in the U.S. and currently resides in Roland Heights, California.  Chiu came to be a poker player by taking a part-time job as a card dealer at a casino in Colorado. He worked as a restaurant owner before deciding to play cards as a full-time gig. He absorbed all the knowledge he could of the game while working as a dealer and after a few years, he decided to sit on the other side of the table and lay his money down.  Chiu won his first significant event at the off-the-strip New Orleans Casino in Las Vegas. Prizes included $214,542 and a Lincoln town car to boot. This win gave him the confidence he needed to play with the big boys in the World Series of Poker. In 1996, Chiu earned his first major event – the $2K limit hold’em tournament – at the WSOP. Since that time, he has won other WSOP tournaments, notably the $3K limit hold’em event in 1998, the $5K seven-card stud event in 2000 and the $5K Omaha Hi/Low event in 2005.  Experience has taught Chiu how to excel in tournament play poker. When asked about playing strategy, Chiu says that he uses detective skills to outsmart his opponents at the table. By concentrating and focusing on their reactions and behaviors, he is able to learn a lot about the type of player they are. Chiu has a quiet, unassuming demeanor that makes it tough for other players to figure him out.  Those who regularly tune in to the “World Poker Tour” on the Travel Channel have probably seen Chiu play the cards with other poker greats. In 2005 alone, Chiu was in the black almost $2 million from his tournament winnings. (Chiu is known for the fact that he does not play in cash games.)
