Chip Reese: ‘The Mathematically Correct Play Is Not Always The Best Play’

David ‘Chip’ Reese is mostly known for his contribution to Doyle Brunson’s “Super System.” But he is also one of the most successful poker player in the world and the acknowledged best Seven Card Stud player in the world.

The College Legend  Chip began playing poker in his childhood. However, he didn’t want to become a road gambler unlike many other talented young players. He became a student of Dartmouth College. He was a smart guy, but sometimes preferred the action of poker games to the boredom of classes. Anyway, he was never seriously punished for it as there hardly was a professor, who didn’t own money to Chip. Dave had a great poker talent and no-one in the area could beat him. His brilliant poker skills became a kind of legend and when he graduated, the poker room in his campus received the name “The David E. Reese Memorial Card Room.” The Vegas Legend  So, nobody doubted that poker was Dave’s calling. And immediately after graduating from the college he became… a Manufacturer’s representative. His annual salary was something like $25,000 – a very good sum for those times. But after a year he quit the job and went to Las Vegas with his friend. They had $400 each. But in the evening of the first day they already had $800 apiece. And in some more days Dave won $60,000 for the first place in a tournament.   In no time Chip became a legend in the city, where the toughest gamblers played. And he was one of the youngest players there. Doyle Brunson states that Chip was “one of the two finest young (under 30) all-around Poker players in the world. (Bobby Baldwin is the other one.)” Analysis And Instincts  Chip Reese lives in Las Vegas. He plays high-stakes poker for living and has obtained 2 WSOP bracelets. In 1991 he became the member of Binion’s Hall of Fame.   Though Chip is excellent at any kind of poker, his best game is Seven Card Stud. “Chip’s the best Seven-Card Stud player I’ve ever played with,” asserts Doyle Brunson in his “Super/System.” Though Chip has an excellent analytical mind developed by academic background, he has a great sense of the game, which helps him to win in due to his instincts.
