Poker Player Profile – John Racener Gunning

As everyone with a steady pulse and television set know by now, the poker players who will compete for the World Series of Poker Main Event Championship was set a couple of weeks ago. The final table reads sort of like the Mickey Mouse club. You have one or two folks with some name recognition and an entire field of near nameless rabble that most people wouldn’t recognize on the street unless their photo was hanging prominently in the local post office with a large dollar value attached to it. In the case of the WSOP Main Event, the part of Annette Funachello will be by Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, and the other eight poker pros will be the supporting cast in funny ears. So as long as they took the time to play in this poker tournament, we may as well take a few moments to introduce you to some of them. Thanks to some high profile appearances at some big poker tournaments (and a relatively funny name), a lot of the poker elite are well aware of whom Mr. Gunning is and the sort of skills he brings to the poker table. Casual poker fans are just starting to take note of him (along with anyone he may owe money too as well as the IRS). For those who are getting their first glimpse at this particular poker pro, we start with the fact that he is the youngest player at the WSOP Main Event table. Racener Gunning has drawn a couple of very influential entities into his corner. He is sponsored by the online poker giant, Full Tilt and has all his professional issues dealt with via his agents at Poker Players International. To date, Gunning has had a lot of experience and financial success playing the game of poker, but when it comes to championships he is more often than not, the bridesmaid. In 2007, when he was barely old enough to even enter a casino, he was teased with his first World Poker Tour championship. He reached the outer fringes of a final table but wound up being eliminated in 8th place. A few months later he followed up this near victory with an actual victory at a WSOP circuit event and has since gone on to cash at the World Series of Poker 8 times. At this point he is sitting in fourth place in the Main Event chip count. We wish him luck as he goes for the first WSOP bracelet of his short, but successful career.
