The battle between the state of South Carolina and the resident Indian tribe, the Catawba Indian Nation, continued recently when the state took steps to clear up a recent bit of check-raising by the Catawbas.State Attorney General Henry McMaster filed a motion arguing that the state’s 1993 settlement with the Nation means video poker is a no-go on their reservation. The motion included affidavits from former Gov. Carroll Campbell’s senior counsel Mark Elam and US Representative John Sprat. The appeal was filed in response to a judge’s ruling that authorized video poker machine operation on the Catawba’s York County reservation. Ironically, once the Catawbas received permission to go forward with their video poker plans, they offered the rights up in exchange for the chance to open a bingo parlor in another town.
