Orlando Maldonado is a quarter of a millionaire. Taking first place in event three at the Fourth Annual Five Diamonds Poker Classic won this Tampa, Florida resident a pile of cash and the healthy respect that comes from winning any major event, especially if one of your opponents at the table is WSOP bracelet holder Scotty Nguyen. The table started playing at three pm, and Jeff Cohen, also of Florida, was among the players. There was plenty of aggressive play from J.C. Tran, but in the end Cohen, Tran and Maldanado were the last three at the table.
Cohen went out next, taking third place and a healthy $62,015. Now it was just down to Nguyen and Maldonado, and it didn’t take long to establish the winner. As they started the heads up competition Maldonado caught two pair on the flop while Nguyen only had one. The turn brought Nguyen his second pair, prompting him to move all in. Maldonado called, bringing the game to an end when the river was a blank. Second place went to Scotty with $124,030, and Orlando Maldonado grabbed $234,095 as well as a seat in the $25,000 + $500 2006 WPT Championship.
