Swedes Join Poker Party

By launchpoker, Nov 25, 2005

It looks like a another place around the poker table needs to be set as Sweden joins the gang for poker night. A recent decision by Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Bosse Ringholm gives the green light to state-owned gambling monopoly Svenska Spel to create and operate an Internet poker service. Ringholm, who is also the gaming minister, laid down a specific series of restrictions in order to allow the service to go forward.

No one under the age of 18 will be allowed to play on the Internet service, and poker is the only game in town, as casinos and betting exchanges are not allowed. In addition to those and other factors, players have to set limits for themselves up front, indicating exactly how much they are willing to lose.

Ringholm said the reason he is allowing the poker service to go forward is control; by creating a state controlled poker site online, it can be under the states watchful eye.
