Poker Tournament To Help Troops

This past spring Park City was witness to a huge amateur poker tournament, sponsored by Wichita's Amateur Poker League. The League announced Saturday it will repeat the efforts nationwide in support of our troops.

There will be at least 12 large-scale tournaments in cities including Dallas, St Louis and as far south as Miami; the first event, however, is going to be close to home as the tour kicks off Dec. 10 and 11 in Wichita.

The Coalition to Support America's Heroes, a group that helps disabled soldiers returning from Iraq, will be the organization to receive the proceeds from the tour.

Former Wichita Mayor Bob Knight held a press conference Saturday morning at Century II Convention Center to announce the details.

"One of the things we're united around in this nation, state and city, regardless of your political beliefs... is, people believe we should take care of our veterans," Knight said.

When the Park City event drew 18,000 participants, it occurred to the organizers they could do some large-scale good.
