Local Police Stop Poker Fundraiser

Cardrooms and casinos are not an unusual sight in California, and organizations interested in capitalizing on the nation’s crazy love affair with Texas Hold'em poker in order to raise funds for charitable means have had no problem doing so, despite laws that say the game can only be played in the established casinos. That changed recently in Almaden, when the Almaden Business Association attempted to put on a tournament to raise money for the Almaden library, to support the children’s story telling section.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer's office heard about the fundraiser and got in touch with the organizers, saying the poker tournament could not go on. The office says it had no choice, that the law prohibits it; yet this is the first example of enforcing the law.

"It's kind of absurd", says an Almaden Business Association member, Rich de la Rosa, who is also a former San Jose City Council candidate. "Law-enforcement agencies, sheriff's associations all have had casino nights. It's just a shame that someone found it necessary to pick on a children's library benefit."
