North Carolina Seizes Poker Machines	Oct 23 2005, 05:00

The Mecklenburg County sheriff in North Carolina would like to get rid of all the video poker machines in the state. Jim Pendergraph’s department raided eight local establishments, charging the employees and business owners with operating illegal video poker machines this week. 20 machines were seized along with $24,000.

Pendergraph says the machines are heading north from South Carolina, which placed a ban on them in 2000, before it established a lottery. Now that North Carolina has established a lottery the sheriff hopes the state will get around to banning the machines.

“It doesn’t make any sense to me that somebody would put a $20 bill in a video poker machine, expecting to win $10 and some little gag gift,” Jim Pendergraph said. “It just doesn’t happen.”

The operators of the machines are accused of dispensing cash to winners, at which point the entire operation becomes illegal. As long as no cash prizes are paid out, the machines are operating within the law. Sheriff Pendergraph would just as soon get rid of them all together, at which point there would be no question of the law being followed.
