President George W. Bush signed the Safe Port Act into law yesterday, and along with it the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. While some diehards were holding out hope, the fact that the anti-online gambling act was attached to the Safe Port Act in the first place made it a foregone conclusion that Bush would sign it into law. The long term affects on the gambling industry remain unclear, but some industry players acted immediately. One online poker room, PokerRoom.com, has blocked access to real money gambling to US players soon after the bill became law. Pro poker players and other industry entities will likely continue fighting the outlawing of online poker.
