In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Todd Erks saw his business close because of poker. More specifically, because of a misunderstanding of poker’s legality in his Harrisburg bar, Todd’s Place. The establishment was holding Texas Hold’em tournaments in what local Lincoln County authorities decided was an illegal fashion.
Erks, who is considering a petition drive to classify Hold’em poker as a game of skill, reopened his bar last week, but without the poker. In fact, he had to agree not to allow any sort of card playing whatsoever. Todd’s Place was charging a fee to allow players to participate, who then got a stack of chips to play. The bar was keeping part of the fee and the rest went to prizes.
Prosecutors had stated that unlike pool or darts, poker is a game of chance, not skill, and games of chance are illegal outside of casinos in Harrisburg.
