Despite cutting back on the number of poker machines in circulation in Moonee Valley, the money spent playing the gambling game has increased over the last year. Last year the punters of the Valley spent $75.75 million, and the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation reports that $76.85 million was spent this year. Players are simply putting more money into fewer machines. Poker spending has increased by a factor of four ever since the machines were introduced in 1993, when the figure was around $19 million. Moonee Valley has some 750 machines divided up among eleven gaming locations.
