House Speaker Jim Black supposedly received two thousand dollar campaign contributions from women who, according to their suspect testimony, were acting independent of one another, yet both citing the same reason for the contribution; they heard Jim Black supported video poker. The contributions were made to the reelection campaign on the same day, and neither had made that big of a contribution to a political party or individual running for office prior. The attorneys on the case are trying to emphasize the ties the two women have to Leon Johnson, a video poker operator. Both women deny that the money they contributed to Black's campaign was given to them by Johnson, or that he had any involvement with their contributions at all; should it come out that Johnson did give them the money or ask them to make the contribution he would be in hot water, as this is an illegal activity in North Carolina.
