The future of smoking in casinos in Atlantic City is unclear, but the first step towards allowing smoking near the slot machines and poker rooms has been taken, despite the opposition from anti-smoking activists and casino employees. A new ordinance has changed the direction of a complete smoking ban to allow for enclosed and well ventilated smoking rooms on a quarter of the gaming floors. The first vote passed, but it has yet to be made into an official ordinance. The major objection from casino employees was the fear they would be forced to work in a smoke-filled environment.
