When an online poker room makes a guarantee, they are taking a gamble that enough players will pay up the buy in to cover the prize pool. If for some reason there are less players than they anticipated, then they are going to be out of pocket on the event, paying out company money to cover the guarantee. This is called an Overlay, and Bodog seems to be running into them a lot lately. A recent online final table with a $70K guarantee only had 1,051 entrants paying the $50 buy-in, so the players' money only came up to $52,550. Bodog ended up paying out $17,650 to meet its obligation.
