A guy named Occham once came to the conclusion that when something has a number of different solutions, the easiest one is generally the best one. Soon after coming up this theory he was blinded by the massive flash of the obvious that erupted directly in front of him. This principle was later called “Occham’s Razor”, and sales of Tylenol dropped in any community where this idea was practiced widely. Now that we are into the time of year when peoples fancy turns to thoughts of how bad they will look in a bathing suit a few months from now, we have to discuss how Occham’s razor applies to dieting.
Dieting is an incredibly simple thing on the surface; if we burn more calories than we take in, we will lose weight. In other words; duh! As with every simple idea, somebody has to come along and muck up the works. In the case of dieting it is thousands of somebody’s who have made this much more difficult than it needs to be. Billions of dollars have been spent on telling us that our path to sveltness and rock hard abs is paved with grapefruits, pharmaceuticals, or in the case of Dr. Atkins, pork rinds. Let me make this simple for everyone; there is no weight loss silver bullet. Shedding pounds is not necessarily achieved by surgically re-plumbing your innards, a celebrity endorsed “meals on wheels” program, or drugs that have the words “anal leakage” worked into the small print. Eating less and exercising will work every time it is tried.
The only bit one should add when they have started to decrease the number of calories they take in and increase the number of miles being put on their running shoes is vitamin supplements. When you eat less, you reduce the amount of nutrients along with the amount of fat that is going into the body. When you work out, you need something to help you recover afterwards. So those who are still actively following their New Year’s resolution and have stopped looking at their cat like it was a Little Debbie snack cake, do this the right way; eat less, exercise, and take vitamin supplements.
