Is it Time to Give Up on Kimbo Slice?

Kimbo Slice

There is no doubt that Kimbo Slice has a lot of power when he punches. If you get pummeled by him on a Friday, the last thing you will remember is his huge fist headed for your face…and suddenly its Tuesday. You will probably be in a bed surrounded by folks with white coats and here the world “coma” more than once. This is exactly why Kimbo would make an excellent addition to any public house that needs a good bouncer, and exactly why he consistently proves that he doesn’t belong in the UFC.

Kimbo is not a fighter, at least not by the standards that the UFC defines a fighter. Kimbo came the MMA industry based a reputation built by viral video. He was a YouTube star for videos of his fights; fights that were little more than street fights against other people who knew how to punch, but had no clue how to fight. Despite the fact that his skills were small, his reputation was huge. It was this reputation that got him a fight in the now defunct “Elite Xtreme Combat” organization. This fight was to be the coming out party for somebody who would be the biggest thing in fighting since Mike Tyson. It was such a big event that the fight would be televised worldwide on a major network.

Kimbo entered the cage, and 14 seconds later the ref was calling for the bell as a relatively unknown Seth Petruzelli beat on a helpless Slice until the brawler could no longer defend himself, or get off the mat. Dana White of the UFC, sensing that there was still some market value in Kimbo Slice, invited him to compete on the UFC’s television show, “The Ultimate Fighter”. Slice was pitted against a fighter who physically had more in common with golf pro John Daly then he did Mohammed Ali. This marshmallow of a man spent two rounds pushing Slice around before a ref, once again, had to stop the fight while Kimbo was helpless on the mat and his opponent was banging away on his head.

This is two big strikes in MMA for Kimbo Slice. If his name wasn’t so well known, he would be out of chances. What happens on the rest of the show “The Ultimate Fighter” is not known yet, but there is nothing he can do there that would remove the stains of his XTC fight, and his first loss on the show. If he does manage to somehow get a victory on “The Ultimate Fighter”, one would need to question if the win was legit, or the product of script. Seeing as White approved season of the show that was exclusive to heavyweights, just for Kimbo Slice, it would look bad if the puncher continued to lose. Dana White is giving him one more opportunity in the UFC, and Kimbo is on the card for UFC 107. If he can’t win there, it is time to give up on Kimbo Slice.
