The final hand of the 2009 World Series of Poker main event final table was nearly a foregone conclusion. Ivan Demidov, the young Russian, had $16 million in tourney chips left. Peter Eastgate, the young Dane, had $120 million.
Peter stated things off with a limp, the first in hours, just calling and completing his small blind with $500k in tourney chips, holding:
.
Ivan, sitting in the big blind, checked his option with a weak hand of:
hoping for some action on the flop. To his regret, he would find it.
The Flop came down as:
giving Ivan a pair, but giving Peter a wheel draw. Ivan checked, Peter put out $1.25 million, which Ivan called, and it was time for fourth street.
The Turn came down:
perhaps the worst card in the deck for Ivan. This made Peter’s straight, but it also gave Ivan two pair, a hand nearly impossible to get away from under the circumstances. Ivan checked, Peter bet out $2 million, and Ivan raise it to $6 million. Peter just called, further laying the trap.
The River was:
nothing to anyone, and Ivan was first to act. He tried his best and moved all in, and Peter called. When the cards were flipped Ivan was knocked out in 2nd, with $5.8 million as his reward, and 22 year old Peter Eastgate was the latest WSOP champion, $9 million richer, and the youngest winner of the WSOP main event in history.
