Not all hands are monsters like they appear to be on the World Poker Tour. At the 2009 NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship more hands are shown that accurately reflect how a poker game goes down. In this episode it was Huck Seed and Sammy Farha at the featured table, and Vanessa Rousso and Bertrand “Elky” Grospeillier at a second table in the semi final round.
In this hand Huck and Sammy showed a very typically poker hand – small action until one player decides they don’t want to chase, and then they give it up.
Sammy had Qh and 3s and he raised it to $18k, about three times the big blind. Huck, with a dominated five, Qd and 5d, made the call.
The Flop hit 9s 8h 3h and Huck checked it over to Sammy. Sam only had bottom pair, but a very nice kicker. A small pair makes it an easy decision to try and take a pot down with a smallish bet. He really didn’t want Huck to call him here, because a call would likely indicate he had Sammy beat already.
Sam fired out $17k and sat back to see what would happen. As expected, Huck laid down his hand, and shipped the pot over to the aggressor with the small pair:
