2008 WSOP - Self Destruction

A player can be at the top of their form, but all it takes is one bad move and their World Series of Poker dreams would be over. This was the case during the 2008 WSOP on day seven, when one young player completely misread the signs against the oldest player at the table, and wound up stabbing himself in the foot.

In this hand the oldest player, truck driver Dennis Philips, faced off against one of the player who, if they won, would reset the record for the youngest winner ever - Nick Sliwinski. In this hand Dennis started things off with:

and made it $460k to go. Nick was ready to play along with the discount from the big blind holding:

his first mistake.

The Flop immediately turned against Nick, if he but knew it. It was:




all hearts, giving Dennis a flush right off the bat. Nick, first to act, bet $500k in tourney chips, and Nick called.

The Turn was no help to Nick, although it looked like a help when it gave him a pair. It was:




and he fired another bulled to $1.2 million. Dennis smooth called again.

and this time Nick moved all in. Dennis did not even blink he called so fast. Nick took some time to turn over his hand, so distraught was he. He was out in 13th place with $450k cash, and Dennis scooped a $10.4 million pot.
