Curiosity Call

Sometimes in poker a player needs to see what his opponent has, even if it costs him. In this hand that is exactly what happened, and it was a costly move indeed. During the final table at the Season Seven World Poker Tour Legend of Poker, played at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles and only two were left -- John Pham and Amit Makhija.

Int his hand John was first to act, with:

he raised it up to $300k in tourney chips. Amit, holding:

made the call.

The Flop was:

and John was out in front with the slightly better hand. Both players checked it to 4th Street.

The Turn came:

now giving the nut flush draw to Amit, more outs for a win.

He bet $400k and John made the call.

The River hit:

and suddenly Amit was winning with two pair. He bet one million and you could almost see John start to sweat. That was a pricey bet to call if he were wrong, but he did have top pair. He called, a curiosity call, and immediately regretted it.
