WPT Season 6 - The Fighting Finns

Finland's Thomas Wahlroos had no cool nickname like his pal Jani Sointula, who had been given the name "Hellraiser" on the tourney circuit. But he didn't need a cool nickname to play against Jani, who he had faced on and off for five years across the poker table. Now he was facing him again, this time at the Grand Prix de Paris during the sixth season of the World Poker Tour, in the swanky Aviation Club in Paris, France.

The two were part of four left fighting for the title, but in this hand it was just the fighting Finns. Jani opned up the action with:

... raising it to 80k in tourney euros. Thomas looked down to see:

... a hand he might have tossed with anyone else. As it was his pal across from him, he called.

  The flop came down:

... Thomas liked the open ended straight draw he saw - he would need either a four or a nine to make a straight, and likely break Sointula in the process. He bet out 150k.

Jani, however, was also playing against a well known opponent. He knew how Thomas played, and likely put the exact hand Wahlroos had into his calculations. He didn't want to give him a chance to hit that straight, and so he moved all in.

Thomas thought for a few moments, but then decided to bow out, and folded. The hidden dealer cam showed that the turn would have been one of the cards he needed, a four.
