They don't call it the Legends of Poker for nothing, and a couple of well-known poker stars were on hand for the event at the Bike Casino in LA as part of the fifth season of the World Poker Tour. Hoyt Corkins and Scotty Nguyen were on hand, but there were some lesser known pros and a few newcomers as well, like Joe Pelton.
The young man was the first to enter the first pot of the final table, firing a $100k bet into the pot while holding wired threes. His:
... wasn't the best hand in the world, but Joe knew it was often what you represented that won pots. The only other player wanting in on the action was Hoyt, who liked his wired nines. He called with:
... The Flop hit:
... improving neither player's hand. Joe was first to act, and with eyes hidden behind dark glasses (just like Hoyt) he fired a second bullet at the pot. When he calmly announced a $200k bet the attention shifted to the Alabama Cowboy, who was faced with a tough decision. Joe raised pre flop, and fired a nice bet into the post flop pot, and while Hoyt actually had him crushed, he didn't know that.
Commentator Mike Sexton piped up, "Ah, the power of youth!" Faced with such aggression, Hoyt folded and the first hand went to Joe. "Vince,"
continued Mike, "(Hoyt) just got outplayed."
This hand is a great example of the power of selective aggression in No Limit Holdem, a power that Joe wielded with great skill.
