One has to wonder if Dick Van Patten was playing badly because he was nervous or because he was a bad player. Dick has been around poker for a long, long time. He was even a commentator on the World Series of Poker a few decades ago, which helps to explain how his son Vince wound up commentating on the World Poker Tour. Vince was in the game, however, along with Dick at the Father and Son Event during season five of the World Poker Tour, but had yet to play a hand as he watched his dad call off their chip stack.
Doyle Brunson and son Todd Brunson were also in the game, and in this particular hand. Todd made it $18k to go with:
... and Dick, likely tired of calling, raised all in. Unfortunately for him, he was holding:
... which son Vince called "a disaster" after Todd called and both teams flipped over their pocket cards.
The flop came:
... and there was no improvement for either player, which kept Todd in the lead. Earlier in the match commentator Matt (standing in for Vince) had asked Mike Sexton about the "tag out" option the teams had. At any point the waiting player could tag the "in" player and take their place, and Matt asked, "When do you tag your father out of the game?" in reference to Vince's desperation to play. "You don't" said Mike, and that was the case here. Vince was more respectful of his father's honor than his own desire.
The turn came:
... followed by a river card of:
... and just like that the Van Patten team was out without Vince getting to play a single hand.
