Often when players get involved in a pot they will end up with the same hands or similar, and it is the difference in position and playing style that determines who wins the pot. This was the case during the Father and Son Event held during season five of the World Poker Tour, when Todd Brunson and Dick Van Patten got involved in a hand.  Dick had been playing a loose and passive playing style, and calling off most of the chips, making son Vince Van Patten wonder if he was going to get a chance to play. Doyle Brunson and son Todd, who had stayed out of the hands so far, finaly found themselves in a place to play a hand when Dick limped from the small blind with: ... and Todd was able to check from the big blind with: ... When the flop came down: ... both players wound up with top pair, but Dick had a horrible kicker and was out of position by having to act first. He checked, so naturally Todd bet, and Dick called the $10k.  The turn came: ... and the pattern repeated, this time Dick check calling a $20k bet from Todd.  When the river hit: ... and Dick checked, Todd was sure his hand was best and bet out $30k, prompting Dick to fold. Commentator Mike Sexton pointed out that both players actually played their hands well. "Todd made a great value bet at the river, and Dick made a nice lay down," certain that Todd had hit the Ace.
