During a big game like NBC's National Heads-Up Poker Championship one would expect to find pro poker players, newly minted poker experts, and the occasional movie star, but not a baseball player. Orel Hershiser, however, isn't just any baseball player. A retired major league pitcher with tons of awards, Orel is also an expert at poker, a game he loves. In this hand, playing versus Ted Forrest, Orel shows both his skill and how far he has to go to catch up to the poker pros.
Orel took a peek at his starting hand:
... and made a decent raise pre flop to $1,200. His opponent had a much better hand, however - Cowboys:
... Ted raised it up another two grand in tourney chips, making it $3,200 to go. Orel called and it was time to see who was making the best decisions. The flop hit:

... and just like that Orel went from a dog to way out in front, two pair. A hand like two pair is often very well camouflaged, so when playing one post flop a poker player wants to be careful not to give too much away. Especially with a hand like this, when the opponent starts off with a huge pocket pair, a crafty player can reel in a really big pot. But Orel, despite his growing expertise, was still new to the game. Ted bet out $2,000 as an exploration, to find out where his opponent was. He found out when Orel pitched too hard and moved all in over top - that was all a pro like Ted needed to fold out of the way.
