Howard Lederer is known as "the Professor" for a couple of reasons. He looks a little bit like a college professor, with his suit jacket and goatee, and he has a professorial manner about him. He also knows more about the game of poker than most people, and enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. This knowledge extends to include the fact that even the Professor can get schooled.
Howard was playing in season three of Poker After Dark, Jam-Up Week, along with David Williams, Antonio Esfandiari, Eli Elezra, and Mike Matusow. In this particular hand he was second to act, after Eli raised it to $900 while holding:

... made the call. The first three board cards were dealt out and showed:

... giving the Professor top pair. Both players checked, however, and the turn card was dealt:
... and this time Howard led out with $1,100. Eli, knowing Howard to be a tight player, raised it to $2,200, setting up a tricky move for later in the game.
The final card, called the river card, was dealt:
... Howard checked and Eli, who said later in an interview, "I knew if he had a single pair he would fold (to any aggression)," bet $5,000. Howard thought about it for a moment, mistakenly figured he was beat, and gave up the hand.
