Poker After Dark - Brat to Basics

Phil Hellmuth is many things. He is a poker pro, he is a shill for his own product lines, he is an egomaniac, and he is sometimes capable of living up to his nickname, the Poker Brat. During NBC's Poker After Dark's 3rd season, during Heckler's Week, he faced former foes such as Sam Grizzle, pals like Shawn Sheikhan and Mike Matusow and the indifferent few - Jean-Robert Bellande and Gavin Smith. All of these players would tease and cajole Phil, but one thing was for sure, no matter what they said - they respected his poker game.

In one hand in particular he made a very nice move and took down a pot pre flop, and while he did not make a terrible lot of money, he did out play the others in the hand. He got teased for his play, of course, and he did what he always does - tell the others to "wait till they see it" after the show airs, and they will presumably see how good he really is. In this case, surprisingly, he was right.

Bellande was in the hand with:

... Jean-Robert is an aggressive player under most circumstances, so it's no surprise that he raised with this hand to $500 in chips and cash. Shawn was in for the ride, very happy with his:

... thinking he was going to sneak in and slam Bellande. Then it was Phil's turn. Phil had:

... This hand is great if you happen to hit the flush, but is it worth a $3,000 raise? That was the amount Phil put in, and of course Bellande folded out of the way. One expected Shawn to come over the top here, but instead he went into the tank, and thought for a long time. Apple Jacks is a tricky hand to play here, because AK, AQ and AA are way ahead.

Amazingly, he folded. Gavin said to Phil, "I don't like the way you played that hand." Phil laughed, and said, "Just wait till you see what I had."
