Poker After Dark - Auspicious Beginning

While NBC's Poker After Dark had some new faces in their 3rd season, including new hostess Marianela Pereyra, some "old" faces were on hand and continued to play the same way. During Heckler's Week Shawn Sheikhan, Jean-Robert Bellande, Mike Matusow, Sam Grizzle, Phil Hellmuth, and Gavin Smith all took their seats and paid their buy in, and only Sam was new to the format.

In this particular hand Sam decided to sit out while his old nemesis Phil "Poker Brat" Hellmuth took on Shawn Sheikhan. Shawn started the action calling $100 of the big blind with:

... and Phil checked his option from the big blind holding:

... It was time for the board cards. The flop hit:

... and Shawn lead out from under the gun with $200. Phil wasn't having any of that and raised it to $900. Shawn thought for a moment, figured his pair was good, and called. The turn came:

... and Shawn was still ahead, and Phil's club draw was looking weak. Both players checked, though, giving Hellmuth a free card. The river hit:

... and again both players checked. The table teased Phil about being on a busted flush draw, and one player actually grabbed his cards to see. Surprisingly, Phil took it all in stride. It was an auspicious beginning to Heckler's Week, where the producers were certainly hoping for a showdown between Phil and Sam Grizzle, as the pair had once come literally to blows.
