Aussie Millions - King High, Not Good

Sometimes it is appropriate to call down a hand with something like King High. Sometimes it is not. During the Aussie Millions poker pro Erik Seidel faced one of those circumstances at the final table. Down to six players, Erik faced five amateurs, Mike Chrisanthopoulos, Peter Ling, Antonio Casale, Nino Marotta, and Alex Kostritsyn.

Though amatures, they were all giving the pro a run for his money. Mike C was in the chip lead while Ling was the short stack, but the money wasn't coming easy for Seidel, although two good back to back hands had put him second in chips.

... The flop hit:

... giving Alex mid pair. Erik checked, and so did the Russian, and it was time for the turn. The turn card was:

... and Erik checked once more. This time Alex bet $120k. Erik called. When the river hit:

... and Erik checked once more, Alex made a small bet, another $120k. Perhaps it was the size of the bet, but it got Erik thinking that perhaps his opponent was on a busted draw and was trying to make it look good. Surprisingly Erik made the call with just King High, and lost some $300k on the hand.
