What Happens in Vegas

What Happens in Vegas

The movie “What Happens in Vegas” is about a guy who comes to Vegas, hooks up with somebody, uses their money to win millions of dollars, and then has to decide what to do with the windfall once the decision is made that the relationship needs to end. This could easily be a documentary about Jamie Gold’s 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event trials and tribulations, but it’s not. This is a movie about a couple of strangers who wake up together in sin city.

Anonymous “one night stand” style nookie doesn’t sound like a compelling Las Vegas story. That is because this scenario plays itself out thousands of times a day in Vegas. Of course the whole thing looks much more entertaining when Aston Kutcher and Cameron Diaz are the spontaneously intimate strangers.

As the story goes, these two, through a series of odd circumstances wake up together; even worse, they made the biggest mistake one can make in Vegas (besides going all-in on an unsuited 2-7), they got drunk, and got married. It would be an open and shut annulment were it not for the “a funny thing happened to me on the way to the divorce lawyer” situation. Ashton’s character borrowed a quarter from his new wife, and on one play of a slot machine, wins three million dollars. Dissolving the marriage has not become much more complicated.

This would be a very forgettable flick were it not for Ashton and Cameron. Normally I am the type of guy who would happily use Mr. Kutcher to resurrect the practice of using a Wicker Man during the Halloween season, but he was fun to watch in this film and had great chemistry with Ms. Diaz. Overall, there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours then renting this movie and watching it with friends.
