Poker Tips- How not to Play Like A Grinch

Grinch

Anybody who has wore a pair of shoes that were a few sizes too small for any length of time will know that even Regis Philbin on Prozac would be in a bad mood under these circumstances. Like the Grinch, whose discomfort caused him to strap a reindeer antler to a wiener dog and commit dozens of breaking and entering felonies; nobody is at their best when they are not comfy.

Pammy Goes Down Under

Pamela Anderson

Pam Anderson will be playing in this year’s Aussie Millions Poker Championship. Stepping up to this level of competition is a far cry from the night when Rick Salomon won a full access pass to her nether regions during a private game of strip poker.

Poker Lesson 03: Key Winning Factors

If the only ingredient to winning poker were understanding the hierarchy of cards, the World Series of Poker would include third graders, savants, and the occasional imaginary friend. There is so much more that goes into winning poker then just the cards. The intangible aspects of the game are what separate the amateur from the professional.

A lot of people do a lot of unwise things because of the words “I dare you”. The range of consequences that can happen because of a dare can run the gamut from eating strange, exotic, slimy, and gross things all the way to marital relations with a hornets’ nest. Some people claim that Kurt Cobain lost both of the above bets, and that is how he wound up married to Courtney Love, but I digress. Not many people enter the World Series of Poker on a dare, and those who do usually wind up as competitive debris before the first break.

This Week in Poker History: The Opening of the Flamingo (sort of)

Las Vegas

In the annals of poker, gaming, casinos, and Las Vegas itself, one of the biggest personalities in the history of the industry was the infamous Bugsy Siegel. He and the Flamingo will be part of Vegas lore until God sees fit to wipe Sin City off the map with a rain of fire and brimstone, or the recession kills it; whichever comes first. This week in poker history we celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the “official” opening of Bugsy’s creation.

Omaha Hi-Lo - Scooping

A common mistake that a number of players make is that they completely ignore the high hands and focus almost exclusively on making the best low. The reason for this is that flop often comes down with an abundance of low value cards that are more of a help when making a low hand. Settling for a split pot is not a very good way to make money. When the flop produces three or more high value cards, creating a decent low becomes almost impossible, so a high hand may very well scoop the pot.

2008 WSOP Event 51 Winner James Schaaf

Phil Hellmuth had probably spent the night before the Event #51 final table working out the choreography for the touchdown dance he was going to perform after accepting his 12th bracelet and working on how to get just the right inflection in his voice when taunting the second place finisher. Alas, it was not to be. The day started with twenty players, and the final table did not get started until after the dinner break. Phil started off the final seating number two in the chip count, and he never would overcome the chip leader Tommy Hang.
