The Poker Mindset: Essential Attitudes for Poker Success by Ian Taylor and Matthew Hilger

If you consider yourself dedicated to making yourself the best poker player possible this is a book you may not want to overlook. Ian Taylor and Matthew Hilger have compiled a highly detailed look at what key mental attitudes either make or break poker players. Here they share the "secrets that separate top players from the wannabes" and set out to show you the seven basic elements to bring you to a professional level of play.

This is probably not the best choice for novice players. It is appropriate for intermediate level players or very well-studied and dedicated beginners. Such topics as necessary attitudes, the realities of poker, ongoing analysis and self-improvement, keeping your ego in check, and controlling emotions are just a sampling of what you can expect to learn.

Interestingly enough, an entire chapter is devoted to something most of us may not have ever considered - that is, how our own individual life experiences can actually pose a hazard to our playing habits. This chapter provides insight into letting go of the instincts that may govern our thinking, goal setting, and reactions so we can adapt and play pure, quality poker.

The book does an excellent job of looking at such poker realities as coping with loss, bad beats, and how to effectively apply your newly acquired "poker mindset."

Although this book costs more than many poker-related paperbacks available online, it is worth the investment of about $25 because it provides a broad, adaptable base of knowledge that most can put to immediate use to improve their game.
