Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People: The Memoirs of the Greatest Gambler Who Ever Lived by Amarillo Slim preston & Greg Dinkin

The book entitled Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People: The Memoirs of the Greatest Gambler Who Ever Lived, does not contain complicated poker theory, as you might have imagined. Neither contains it a step-by-step winning poker strategy. But in our opinion it is much more valuable than many other pieces of poker literature.    If poker is truly American game, then Amarillo Slim is the last bit of living American history there is. Part Wild West sheriff, part hustler, Slim is one of a kind, said Andy Bellin, the author of Poker Nation. The WSOP 1972 winner, Slim is one of the pioneers of poker, old-timers, as Brad Daugherty says. The book, which appears to be Amarillos autobiography, has that spirit of Wild West, which many think vanished many years ago. Slim denies this belief by each sentence of his witty and intriguing book.    Smart-ass, popping-off, skinny sonovobitch is how I would have described myself, writes Amarillo Slim speaking about his youth. He tells us the stories from his life, one after another. Sometimes he had troubles the Law. Sometimes he seems to be too self-assured. But he is always successful. There isn't any reflection on the times people have outsmarted him but it would have been interesting to hear Slim explain what he learned from those events, says one of the book reviews. I dont think this is right. Of course, there are people who enjoy observing losses of great people. This make their self esteems a bit higher. But Amarillo Slim knows he is a legend, and legends never lose, dont you know it? So any story about Slims misfortune would be an extraneous element here.   The book is written in that inimitable old style Texas language, which makes you enjoy every phrase. It is not a good imitation. It is the native language of the author.   So we recommend this book not only to gamblers, but to everyone who likes witty narration.
